Using The Law of Curiosity to Create Powerful Business (and Personal) Connections - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Using The Law of Curiosity to Create Powerful Business (and Personal) Connections - Introvert Whisperer Using The Law of Curiosity to Create Powerful Business (and Personal) Connections Career Attraction August 18, 2014 Career Development, Communication, Networking No responses Go to top Curiosity may have killed the cat, but I can tell you it never killed a conversation. In fact, showing genuine curiosity about a persons job, life, interests, opinions or needs is a great way to start a conversation, keep it going and create connections. For many of us, starting a conversation with someone can be awkward. It can even feel like a chore. We may feel that we dont have anything interesting to offer the other person, or we dont want to embarrass ourselves by saying something dumb. Or maybe we simply feel as if we dont have time to meet someone new or to get to know someone betterâ"after all, our lives are already too hectic, and we dont feel as if we need any more friends. But continuing to initiate conversations and be curious about people is fundamental to building valuable relationships, because curiosity creates connectionsâ"that is the law of curiosity. When you dont know how to start a conversation, start by being curious. And remember this: People love to talk. You just need to know how to get them going. I dont mean prompting them to launch into a monologue while you passively listen. A good conversation involves give and take; its an exchange in which two people are genuinely engaged, listening, responding and connecting to each other. In my book The 11 Laws of Likability: Relationship Networkingâ¦Because People Do Business With People They Like (AMACOM, September 2011), I provide many ideas on how to put your natural curiosity to work for networking and relationship-building. Here are a few: Spark Interest By Being Curious What would you genuinely like to know about the person? If youâre wondering about the smash hit project she led or his stellar racquetball game, why not ask? If you donât know anything at all about the person, ask general questions about the types of things you like to discover about people you meet. Often picking one topic to pursue is all you need to get the dialogue rolling. Open Up By Asking Questions Ask open-ended questions to start a conversation and keep it flowing. If possible, make your questions person- and situation-dependent. Do you work in the same industry? Then ask industry-specific questions. If youâre meeting someone for the first time in an unfamiliar place, rely on the tried and true âWhat do you do?â Or tweak it slightly by asking âWhat field are you in?â âWhat do you do when youâre not working?â or even âWhat do you want to do next?â Your goal is to uncover what you might have in common and what value you might bring to that person. Asking open-ended questions is also important to keeping the conversation going. For more on open-ended questions, check out this video: Ask Their Opinion Asking someoneâs opinion on something is a surefire conversation starter. Choose whatever topic youâd likeâ"politics, the latest news from Wall Streetâ"just make sure itâs something you want to talk about, too. If youâre not genuinely curious about it, you wonât be fully engaged in the exchange and your chance of forging a real connection diminishes. Follow the Other Personâs Lead Even the most curious people full of probing questions sometimes find themselves in conversations where they suddenly hit a brick wall. When that happens, change the course of the conversation by following the lead of the person youâre talking to. If you hit a topic and the other personâs energy flags, move on to a new topic until you land on one that helps the dialogue flow again. The more energetic responses you get, the better your chances for continuing to probe in ways that build connection. Learn the Art of the Probe Probes are excellent conversation continuers once the initial spark of dialogue has been lit. There are three main types of probes: A clarifying probe effectively demonstrates that youâre paying attention. Re-phrase or summarize what youâve heard and ask if youâve understood it correctly. A rational probe seeks to understand the reasoning behind a stated choice or action. In other words, it asks âHow come?â This is a better choice than âWhy?â since itâs less likely to put someone on the defensive. An expansion probe delves for more information about a given response, epitomized in the classic phrase âTell me more.â Donât Interrogate Be careful not to let your curiosity tip over into a machine gun questioning style. Bombarding people with rapid queries, regardless of your enthusiasm, will make them feel as if they need to protect themselves, and theyâll stay guarded. Conversations are two-sided dialogues. Sprinkling in information about yourself is important, making you more likable, increasing your chances of discovering commonalities and making the person youâre talking to feel comfortable enough to share. Google With Restraint Thanks to the Internet, itâs easy to search every bit of information you can before meeting a person. Yet how genuinely curious can you be if you already know all the answers? Whatâs more, knowing so much about a person in advance might make the actual encounter feel awkward and forced. Better advice? Do enough research that you have a solid base of background knowledge, but donât go overboard. You want there still to be plenty you want to know because, after all, this is the essence of curiosity. What to Know About College Summer Classes
What to Know About College Summer Classes Many students feel that summer is meant for rest and relaxationand it should be! That said, colleges and universities offer hundreds of summer classes each year for students to take advantage of. Typically, these summer classes range from a just a few weeks to a couple of months, but the classes arent always all day or every day of the week. When taking summer classes, students often forget they can arrange their schedule and customize it so the classes they take still fit into their idea of a relaxing summer. What students need to know about college summer classes is that you can get a more personalized learning experience and still have a summer to enjoy, despite taking a class or two! Read on to find out how college summer classes might benefit you. The benefits of college summer classes are often underestimated Many students may fear summer classes because they arent familiar with what they entail and how positive of an impact they can have on one's schooling. But taking just one or two classes during the summer can help you get ahead in your degree path. This could allow you to take a lighter course load in upcoming semesters, or give you the potential to graduate earlier than expected. It can also be beneficial if you have to retake any classes, as summer classes might be more manageable to focus on and succeed in, due to not having many other classes to distract you. [RELATED: Popular Campus Jobs that Can Help You Explore College Majors] During the regular semester, hitches can come up in your degree plan. If you are waitlisted for a class, for instance, taking this class in the summer (if it is offered) could end up being a less stressful solution to your problem and will allow you to still stay on track for your degree. College summer classes dont have to bog down your whole summer Contrary to popular belief, you can still experience summer vacation if you take a class or two. Oftentimes, students think of college summer classes as the equivalent of the dreaded summer school (where classes are typically most of the summer). In some cases, yes, summer classes can last a good part of your summer. Typically, though, they wont be all day every day. The timeframe differs for every class and every school, but they can range from a variety of set-ups. Any combination, including the examples below, could occur: Three weeks long, four days a week, five hours a day Four weeks long, three days a week, four hours a day Six weeks long, two days a week, three hours a day Sometimes, classes will work homework time into the class set-up as well, and some summer classes might involve projects where you get class time off to work on your own. Not all class schedules in the summer are cut and dry, so you might be surprised at the free time you have. Just remember to take note of the attendance policy and follow it appropriately! College summer classes can provide a more intimate learning experience Class sizes vary during the regular semesters, but often, students looking for small, intimate class sizes are left disappointed. Summer classes, however, can have a smaller enrollment limit than usual. With the relaxed feel of classes during the summer and a smaller class size, students may be more likely to encounter a more personal learning experience than they would during the year. Teachers might not be teaching any other classes at the time (and if they are, it might only be one or two), so they very well might devote more attention to your particular class. The same goes for youif you arent enrolled in four or five other classes, you will be able to devote more focused time to the class, making the time requirement outside the classroom likely less. [RELATED:Top 5 Books College Students Should Read this Summer] Keep in mind, if you are planning on going home for the summer, this can still apply to you. Find a community college near you that might have course credits that would transfer to your school. You can still work to get ahead in your degree while being home for the summerjust make sure to verify the classes you choose will count toward your schools program requirements successfully. Most importantly, remember that summer classes arent as scary as they may sound, and they might end up benefiting you in many unexpected ways! Any topics you want to know more about? Let us know! Digital Textbooks
Digital Textbooks Professors can now customize textbooks by editing, rewriting, or deleting various sections of them through new online software. Macmillan, one of the largest publishers of textbooks, is creating a new digital textbook program called DynamicBooks. This program will be like a Wikipedia version of textbooks, according to The New York Times. Many professors use generic textbooks and assign various outside-of-the-book readings and assignments. Also, professors typically ignore certain chapters or sections of the textbook and correct other sections in their lectures. However, this process can be facilitated with Macmillans DynamicBooks because professors can make all of these changes before a class starts. Professors can use DynamicBooks to upload syllabi, pictures, videos, class notes and assignments. Professors can now use textbooks as starting points, rewriting them to teach what is most relevant. This will increase and personalize the learning experiences for students because they wont be learning material from a book written 10 years ago. Class information will be presented in a more organized fashion, and students will be able to digitally access all of the courses relevant information in one area. Also, books purchased through DynamicBooks are likely to be much cheaper compared to more traditional formats. The New York Times used the textbook Psychology by Daniel L. Schacter, Daniel T. Gilbert and Daniel M. Wegner as an example. The books list price is $134.29, Barnes Nobles price is $122.73, and the book will sell for $48.76 at DynamicBooks. Essentially, DynamicBooks will give professors more teaching freedom, and they wont be trapped in the confines of teaching a book from an unfamiliar author. It will be easier for them to personalize every class, changing the textbooks content as needed. DynamicBooks is expected to launch in August with around 100 popular textbooks. The digital program is likely to grow into the future.
French Grammar Rules How to Conjugate Regular Verbs
French Grammar Rules How to Conjugate Regular Verbs Sign up successful I run, becomes he runs. But often times, English verbs are a little more constant than their French equivalents. For example: I do je fais we do nous faisons they do vous faites French grammar is not totally unpredictable, however. Most French verbs actually follow regular patterns according to three groupings: verbs ending in -er, in -ir, and in -re. Of these three groups, -er verbs are by far the most common. Sometimes people will even create their own verbs by adding -er to another common word! A few examples of regular -er verbs include: aimer to like chercher to search or look for compter to count conseiller to advise continuer to continue donner to give écouter to listen (to) parler to talk sauter to jump tutoyer to address someone using âtuâ vousvoyer to address someone using âvousâ essayer to try encourager to encourage nager to swim manger to eat In the present tense, these verbs are conjugated by removing the -er ending and adding different endings (see the bold below) for each subject pronoun as follows: je (I) parle tu (you singular) parles il / elle / on (he / she / one) parle nous (we) parlons vous (you plural) parlez ils / elles (they) parlent There are two exceptions of which to be aware (and dedicated students of French know that French loves exceptions). The first involves those -er verbs ending in -ger. As in English, French pronunciation includes the concept of the hard and soft âg.â Like us, the French often denote their soft âgâs by adding an -e after the -g. For the ânousâ forms of such verbs, the ending therefore changes from -ons to -eons. For example, the correct ânousâ form of âencouragerâ is not âencouragons,â but âencourageons.â The second involves those verbs ending in -yer. For English nouns ending in -y, the plural form changes -y to -i and adds -es. Likewise here, -yer verbs will change -y to -i in addition to replacing -er with the appropriate ending â" except (because French loves exceptions!) for the nous and vous forms. For example, the verb âessayerâ would be conjugated as follows: J essaie Tu essaies Il / elle / on essaie Nous essayons Vous essayez Ils / elles essaient The second largest category in French, -ir verbs, include: choisir to choose finir to finish grossir to gain weight maigrir to lose weight réussir to succeed rougir to blush vieillir to grow old(er) In the present tense, they are conjugated by removing the -ir and adding the endings in bold in the example below: Je finis Tu finis Il / elle / on finit Nous finissons Vous finissez Ils / elles finissent Some common -ir verbs are irregular, such as sortir (to go out) and venir (to come). Most are conjugated as above. The third and smallest group of regular verbs ends in -re, and include: rendre to return entendre to hear attendre to wait (for) perdre to lose défendre to forbid In the present tense, they are conjugated by removing the -re and adding the endings in the example below: Je rends Tu rends Il / elle / on rend Nous rendons Vous rendez Ils / elles rendent As with the other groupings, there are some irregular -re verbs, such as prendre (to take), connaitre (to be familiar with), lire (to read), mettre (to put down), and boire (to drink). To practice our French grammar, lets try a few examples. In each of the following sentences, try to conjugate the correct form of the verb in parenthesis: 1) Nous _____________ (compter) de 1 à 100. We count from 1 to 100. 2) Vous _____________ (finir) vos devoirs. You are finishing your homework. 3) Je _____________ (conseiller) les étudiants de francais de visiter la France au moins une fois. I advise all French students to visit France at least once. 4) Ils _____________ (parler) avec leurs amis. They talk with their friends. 5) Tu _____________ (maigrir)! You are losing weight! 6) Elle _____________ (nager) tous les jours. She swims every day. 7) Je _____________ (rendre) le livre à la bibliothèque. I am returning the book to the library. 8) Nous _____________ (encourager) les uns les autres. We encourage each other. 9) Tu _____________ (chercher) ton livre de francais. You are looking for your French book. Want to check your answers? Here they are: 1) comptons 2) finissez 3) conseille 4) parlent 5) maigris 6) nage 7) rends 8) encourageons 9) cherches Practice makes perfect, so keep on practicing with your tutor and checking yourself. What is it Like to Attend the University of Utah
What is it Like to Attend the University of Utah Edwardo is a current senior at the University of Utah. He is majoring in chemistry, and specializes in Spanish tutoring, calculus tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, he shares his experience at the University of Utah: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Edwardo: The University of Utahs campus is fairly large. There are on-campus busing options with various routes and directions. In addition, there are also city buses that go all over the surrounding areas and the TRAX train system that reaches the far corners of the city. You dont need a car to get where you want to go, but a bike, scooter, or skateboard can get you around campus in no time at all. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Edwardo:Professors offer office hours where students can go in for extra help or questions. For academic advisors, you always have to schedule an appointment at least the week before. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Edwardo:There are a lot of different meal plans offered. The places to eat are all over campus and are very practical. There are a lot of dorms, so there is always something going on. Its typical for people to make friends everywhere they go on campus. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Edwardo:There are a lot of graduate programs at the University of Utah consisting not only of law and medicine, but a huge range of professional studies. To support this, there are a lot of quality majors that are offered and run by prestigious departments. Personally, I am a pre-med chemistry major and I know how helpful my advisors will be in preparing me for life after graduation. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Edwardo:Just by being on campus you hear about so many different events and activities that its hard not to go out and make friends. There are so many students that go to all the sporting events and school sponsored events. Greek life plays a big role in social life, but it isnt the only way of making friends. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Edwardo:The Career Center offers a ton of help and hosts a job fair at least every two months. They also offer workshops and informational meetings every few weeks. The university has some good connections and there are always prominent companies that recruit here. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Edwardo:There are a lot of places to study all over campus, but the best is the library that has computers on multiple floors, group study rooms ranging in size, and quiet study areas. There are always a lot of people here, but because of how its set up, it doesnt feel overwhelming. Describe the surrounding town. Edwardo:Downtown is minutes away, and offers concert venues, restaurants, and shopping. Every weekend has something going on downtown, so there are a lot of people who spend time there. But, with the student life center and the sports complexes on campus, we dont have to go far to do something fun. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Edwardo:There is a large and diverse student body. The freshman classes are always lecture-style and large. But, as soon as you start getting into more specific major-based classes and upper level courses, the size shrinks. I enjoy how the class size always corresponds with how much teacher-student interaction is required. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Edwardo:My freshman year I was in an honors discussion class. It was a smaller size, so we got to know each other relatively well. The professor not only discussed and taught, he also told us about himself and was very relatable. We would run into him all over campus, and I loved realizing that students aren't the only ones who like to take advantage of all campus has to offer. Check out Edwardos tutoring profile.
